The MCQ-based Preliminary Test is FPSC's screening stage before the CSS written examination. It was introduced from the CSS 2022 cycle onward and exists to filter the applicant pool — it is entirely separate from the twelve papers that decide your final merit.
The paper at a glance
| Format | 200 multiple-choice questions |
| Total marks | 200 |
| Duration | 200 minutes |
| Negative marking | None |
| Passing standard | 33% — 66 correct answers |
| Fee | Rs. 250 |
| Counts towards final merit | No — qualifying only |
| Uses one of your three attempts | No |
| Validity | That year's examination only |
Two of those facts should change how you sit the paper:
- There is no negative marking, so every question should be attempted. Leaving one blank guarantees the same zero as answering it wrong.
- Appearing does not consume one of your three attempts, so there is no strategic downside to sitting it even if you feel underprepared.
What is on the paper
Both mocks on this page reproduce this weightage exactly, so a section that costs you marks here is the same section that will cost you marks in the real test.
| Section | Marks |
|---|---|
| General Abilities — quantitative, analytical and mental reasoning | 60 |
| English | 50 |
| General Knowledge — Everyday Science, Current Affairs, Pakistan Affairs | 50 |
| Islamic Studies (Civics & Ethics for non-Muslim candidates) | 20 |
| Urdu — grammar, usage and translation | 20 |
| Total | 200 |
Note the weighting. English alone is a quarter of the paper, and reasoning plus general knowledge together are more than half of it. A candidate who is strong in English and general awareness clears the MPT with comparatively little dedicated revision.
How much preparation the MPT actually deserves
This rarely appears in MPT-focused material, because it argues against selling you a long course. In the CSS 2022 MPT — the first year it was held — FPSC's result notification recorded that 49,038 candidates appeared and 48,787 qualified.

The stage that actually decides your result
The gap between those two numbers is the most important planning fact here: the MPT screens out almost nobody, while the written examination screens out almost everybody. That does not mean ignoring it — failing removes you from the cycle entirely, at real cost. It means the MPT deserves efficient, time-boxed practice rather than months of a calendar that belongs to the written papers. Sitting two full timed mocks is roughly the right amount.
How these mocks work
- Two separate papers, each 200 unique questions matching the weightage above. They do not share questions.
- A real 200-minute timer. The point is practising the pace, not the questions in isolation.
- Your answers save as you go. Refreshing, closing the tab or losing your connection resumes the same attempt where you left off, as long as the timer has not run out.
- Free, unlimited attempts, no sign-up required to take one.
- Signed in, every score is kept and shown on your My Progress page, so you can see whether the second attempt actually improved on the first.
Getting something out of them
A mock you stop halfway through teaches you nothing about the thing the MPT actually tests, which is holding attention across 200 minutes.
- Sit the first one cold, in one sitting, without notes and without pausing. A score you got by pausing tells you nothing.
- Review every question you got wrong, and every one you guessed correctly — a lucky guess is a gap you have not found yet.
- Work on whichever section cost you most, using the weightage table above to decide what is worth your time.
- Sit the second paper a week later under the same conditions, and compare.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I practice MPT past papers?
Practicing official past papers is the most reliable way to prepare for the CSS MPT. It familiarizes you with the exact difficulty level, helps you spot frequently repeated questions, and gives you a realistic measure of your current preparation level against actual FPSC standards.
Are these the exact questions from the real exams?
Yes. We have carefully compiled the authentic 200 MCQs from the official MPT papers of previous years. You are taking the exact same exam that candidates took in those respective years.
What is the passing score for the MPT?
To qualify the CSS MPT, you must score at least 33% of the total 200 marks, which means getting 66 correct answers. There is no negative marking, so you should attempt all questions.
Are the past paper mocks free?
Yes, all MPT past paper mocks on Strategic CSS are completely free to take. You get unlimited attempts and do not need an account to practice.
Are my past paper scores saved?
If you are logged into your Strategic CSS account, your scores are saved automatically to your dashboard so you can track your improvement. If you practice as a guest, you will see your results at the end but they won't be permanently saved.
